Fatal fire in Appalachia might have been caused by candleBy Steve Igo

    Published January 1st, 2009

APPALACHIA "? A candle may have started the New Year's Eve house fire in Appalachia that claimed the life of a 3-year old Rogersville girl.

Wise County Sheriff's Investigator W.C. Darnell on Thursday said Vada Ann Marie Parsons, the 3-year old daughter of Glenna Brooks of Rogersville and Jacob Paul Parsons of Big Stone Gap, sought refuge in a closet in a rear bedroom of the home at 4208 Nicholas Road, occupied by her father's sister, Ritajo Sizemore.

The Appalachia Volunteer Fire Department received the call of people trapped inside a burning home at 3:28 p.m. Wednesday, Darnell said. Firefighters arrived nine minutes later but did not discover the girl's father lying unconcious on the floor of another bedroom until 4:16 p.m. The girl's body was discovered in the closet a few minutes later, he said.

Darnell said the girl was brought to Holston Valley Medical Center by her mother for treatment of a broken bone earlier Wednesday. After receiving treatment, 27-year old Jacob Parsons brought his daughter to Wise County on visitation, he said.

"They were only at the aunt's residence for two-and-a-half to three hours before this incident occurred,"? Darnell said. Sizemore was not home when the fire broke out, he said.

"We think this was an accidental fire that began in the area of the living room,"? Darnell said. "We think the cause is something like a candle."?

Darnell said Jacob Parsons is in critical care at HVMC.

    Re: Fire in Andover

Oh man that is awful. My daughter just turned 3 two days ago and I could not imagine. I have no idea why little children have to leave this earth so early, makes me physically sick to hear of stories like these and the possible pain that child had to go thru.

There's more to the story, but I can't say much about it.
